Artist's Comments

The Moat House Hotel, Armadillo and the Finneston Crane. All located next to the River Clyde. The sixteen-storey high Moat House Hotel is a pretty impressive four star hotel, with it's reflective windows mirroring the beauty of the surrounding area.

Right next door is the "Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre" (more commonly known as the SECC), which host a number of conferences, exhibitions, live performances, concerts and corporate functions all year round. It's impressive structure - the Armadillo proudly on display by the water's edge, which uses a flat sheet material to cover entire building in an arrangement similar to that of the Sydney Opera House in Australia, making it highly visible from the air due to reflected light.

The last structure to dominate the skyline is the Finneston Crane; marking Glasgow's proud past as one of the largest port cities in the world. Many ships and goods were made and traded on the docks of the Clyde. The Finneston Crane is the largest dockside crane in Glasgow. The crane was built in 1932 ad was capable of lifting 175 tonnes.

Yeah, I understand your critisisim. I felt that I really wanted to capture not just the Armadillo and Moat House hotel, but also the Finnieston Crane too. The problem is, as you've stated, is the only way to do that is by using a really wide-angle lens and a fairly "flat" perspective (without a wee swim for the ideal viewpoint that is...).

Cheers for the comment! It's much appreciated! :D

Maybe, a good zoom in to the armadillo and moathouse on one pic and one on the crane, then stitch the two image together.... maybe! could be done

I do have a photo of the Armadillo and the Moat House actually, but it just doesn't seem as compositionally strong... I suppose the subject does lend itself well for a panoramic shot. It may be hard though to make a photo with a less wide-angle lens so I avoid distortion. Well have to see I guess...

Again - thanks for the suggestion! :)

Really unusual POV to take this picture from - I know this scene really well - cycling past it every day, but you've managed to compose it in a way that I've never really seen - it's always great when somebody looks at something you know really well in a different way - it makes it seem like you are seeing it for the first time. It also makes me look forward to taking pictures in that great light you get in Scotland in the winter - not that I'm wishing the summer away!

Thanks, I'm glad you like the photo :D. It's good to hear from a fellow Glaswegian. I really do love photography because it has helped me become more aware of the enviroment around me. Like you mentioned about this photo (which I'm very flattered about by the way), photography has made me see the familiar as if it were for the first time - every day. It amazes me how much there is out there that we are ignorant to till we really start thinking about it and each day I seem to uncover something new about the places I pass - even on a regular basis.

It has to be said - I'm looking forwards to that winter light too - at the very least it means I can be lazier when it comes to taking sunrise/sunset photos! :P

Love your gallery by the way, you've got some great talent there - especially taking candid photos. That's a scene I'd really like to break into one of these days. I'll try and comment some of your work at some point, but I'm pretty busy right now, so have only really been lurking this place of late...

Cheers for the comments mate! :D

A really good looking cityscape! I've been to the armadillo for ScotHot (Scottish Hotel of the year) and enjoyed strolling through its insides :D But this shot makes it look even more special, with that sky and all. Good timing.

I know you left this comment a while back but I thought I should reply to it all the same - been away from this place for soooo long!!

Anyways, thanks for the compliments! It's definetly one of my favorite photos. Loved the colours in the sky too. Lucky you having a good look round the indoors of the Armadillo - never had an excuse to go in - sure it's pretty impressive though!

Thanks for your comment!
